Nearly 600 alumni, students, faculty and staff take time for health and fitness

The Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5k is one of Oakland County’s premier quality of life events. This year, Oakland University took its partnership with the race to the next level by welcoming nearly 600 alumni, students, faculty and staff who took advantage of the health and fitness opportunities that the race offers.

Alumni, students and staff sported black knit OU caps during the race and stopped by a university hospitality tent to enjoy healthy snacks and beverages before and after the race.

“We are proud to partner with the Brooksie Way and in doing so to expand the reach and impact of this fun and challenging fitness event,” said OU President Gary Russi.

The Brooksie Way offered registration discounts to Oakland alumni and students while the university provided a discount for faculty and staff.

Among the runners was former OU basketball player Scott Bittenger (1984-88), the first All-American men’s basketball player in school history. He was voted GLIAC player of the year in 1988 and helped the team win its first 20 win season.

“The event was just fantastic,” Bittinger said, who has gone very year since the second race and keeps going to show his support. “The weather was perfect, the course was beautiful, and I broke my personal record for time.”

The Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5k attracts thousands of participants and receives widespread community support. During this, the five-year anniversary of the Brooksie Way, Oakland again hosted the race on Sept. 30 and the Fitness Expo held Sept. 28 and 29.
