Jan Graetz - Spotlight on OU

2013 AUFD Spotlight on OU Questionnaire

Janet Graetz
Team Leader — Human Development & Child Study

If you could describe your day as a traffic sign which one would you choose? Why?

Caution: Speed Bumps Ahead. Every day seems to be filled with challenges and opportunities. If there were no challenges then we would all be so bored! I think the important part is to remember to keep a balance between the ‘smooth roads ahead’ and the ‘bumps’.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Butterscotch. I was raised in a farm town in Ohio where Jeff’s Drugstore served the best ice cream. A one scoop cone was seven cents. For thirteen cents you could get two scoops! Nowadays I go to an ice cream store and find myself paying at least $3.00. Ah…..the good ole’ days!

If you wrote your memoirs today, what would the title be?

See Mom Run

What is the best reward that someone could give you?

Dark chocolate

What do you feel is the best part of the All-University Fund Drive?

Having the opportunity to talk with others about our great university and to help them see how their donations can greatly assist an organization or group. I greatly support OUCARES (Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support). We live in a community that has been greatly affected by autism. A donation to OUCARES can be used to give valuable support to individuals and families affected by autism.

What is your philanthropic passion?

To see that OU expands services and supports to individuals and families affected by autism. I began working in state institutions more than 30 years ago and remember seeing how those with severe disabilities were not afforded any quality of life. Everyone has a right to a life of quality and that includes those severely impacted by autism. Our gifts to OUCARES can help promote a life of quality to others. It’s a simple gift and yet one that can change lives.
