Message from your Team Co-Captain and Interim Associate Provost:

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I believe that giving is all about making a difference and that is why I give to the AUFD. My contributions can have a tangible and positive effect on others. With a struggling economy, many of our students are experiencing financial difficulties more than ever before, and this year I will focus my donations on funds that will directly benefit students. In the past, I have donated to funds that targeted enhancing curricular innovation, supporting greater diversity on campus, or providing for a more comfortable environment for us all.

One evening my spouse returned from the grocery store and told me about standing in line while patiently waiting for a young mother to pay for a huge amount of groceries. She was using a food assistance card to pay and did not have sufficient funds – she was going to have to put some items back. Without even hesitating, the person in line ahead of my husband and behind the young woman, pulled out his credit card and paid for the entire grocery bill. The woman was very touched and thankful. As my husband told me about this experience, it made us both think about how occasions to help others are truly a gift and if we ever have that type of opportunity we would not hesitate. This kind and giving individual made a difference, in a very direct way, in the life of another. While I might not always be able to witness the direct effects of giving as described in this account, it makes me happy just to think of the impact it has on individual lives. The joy our students experience when they open scholarship letters, the peace one finds when chatting with a friend on a donated bench, or the inspiration to innovate that is summoned when faculty have additional support – these are the kinds of feelings I envision when I consider how my gift will make a difference.

Mary Stein
