Week of Champions 2012 to showcase OU history, school spirit

The Oakland University campus community will once again show its spirit during the annual Week of Champions. 

This five-day extravaganza kicks off on Monday, Oct. 8, with a Countdown to “The Madnezz,” featuring a Beatles tribute show, along with OU founder Matilda Wilson’s 129th birthday bash and the university’s 55th anniversary celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Oakland Center Pioneer Food Court. The evening will feature a talk from Jamie Tworkowski , founder of To Write Love on Her Arms, a nonprofit group dedicated to helping those who suffer from depression. This free event will take place at 8 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms and is sponsored by Athletics, OU Student Congress, Residence Halls Association and Student Life Lecture Board. 

Festivities will continue with the grand opening of the First Year Advising Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 9, in 121 North Foundation Hall. The evening will bring an edition of “OU’s Got Talent” presented by the Student Program Board. This free show, featuring comedian Ty Barnett, is set for 7 p.m. at Meadow Brook Theatre.

Students are encouraged to stop by the Center for Student Activities on Wednesday, Oct. 10 for OU’s “Get Involved Day” from 10 a.m. to  6 p.m. In addition, the Grizz Gang will host “The Shootout” featuring the men’s and women’s basketball teams from noon to 1 p.m. in the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge.

On Thursday, Oct. 11, the university community will observe National Coming Out Day with the “Coming Out Monologues” sponsored by the campus Gay/Straight Alliance at 7 p.m. in Oakland Center Gold Room A. The day also includes a scavenger hunt sponsored by the Student Alumni Association from 5 – 9 p.m. in Oakland Center Gold Room B. Grizzly faithful will usher in “The Madnezz” on Friday, Oct. 12, with the university’s inaugural Color Day. Members of the campus community are encouraged to show school pride by donning OU apparel. All are invited to the OU Student Congress Tailgate Party from 7-9 p.m. in parking lot P-16. The evening promises plenty of laughs during Friday Night Live with comedian Tony Baker from 7-8 p.m. in Vandenberg Dining Center. The headline event, “Grizz Madnezz,” will take place from 9-10 p.m. in the O’rena.
