Women's basketball and golf teams recognized for academics
The Oakland University women’s basketball team and women’s golf team each have been named a recipient of the NCAA Public Recognition Award. The honor is reserved for collegiate athletics teams that have a multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of college teams nationwide in their respective sports.
The awards for 2012 were based on the 2010-11 multi-year APR and demonstrate the teams’ commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom.
“Our mission statement says we produce graduates and champions,” said Scott MacDonald, director of athletic communications. “Before you can ever win a championship, you must perform in the classroom and that is what our student-athletes understand when they come to Oakland University. Champions are born in the classroom, and then that success will carry on to the field or the arena. The coaching staff, academic services and student-athletes all deserve this prestigious recognition from the NCAA.”
While Oakland has received this honor five times in school history, this is the first time that two teams have been recognized in the same year. The women's golf team has claimed the honor three times, while this marks the first occasion for women's basketball. Both teams received a congratulatory letter of recognition from the NCAA.
