OU's Hispanic Celebration Month features speakers, events

By Victoria Lipscomb, media relations intern

Oakland University kicked off its annual Hispanic Celebration month, La Familia Internacional, on Monday Sept. 17. The celebration recognizes the culture, history and politics of multiple Hispanic countries and their people locally and globally.

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, the Oakland community is strongly encouraged to volunteer at the Hispanic Outreach Center in Pontiac. It is an opportunity to work alongside Hispanic Outreach students and mentors to help prepare their community fall garden.

From 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, participants can enjoy a powerful poetic performance by Mayda Del Valle in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms. Del Valle has appeared in Urban Latino Magazine, Latina magazine, The Source, Mass Appeal, and the New York Times. She was also chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of “America’s young innovators in the Arts and Sciences.”

The celebration will conclude Friday, Oct. 5, on the Oakland Center Patio. All are welcome to attend and support Oakland University students and their literary work in Spanish.
