OU-Macomb to sponsor run/walk event to end domestic violence
More than 500 walkers and runners are expected to participate in the annual Turning Out to End Domestic Violence: Tara Grant Memorial Run/Walk, sponsored by Oakland University-Macomb. This is the fifth anniversary of the event, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 Crocker Boulevard in Mount Clemens.
Oakland students are eligible for a discounted registration fee of $15. All other participants can register for $25. OU students, staff, faculty and alumni participating in the event will also get a free “team” T-shirt by visiting the OU Anton/Frankel Center before the event with OU identification.
This year, Turning Point has partnered with CCPlus Dance/Fun/Fitness to offer a free Family Health Fair. Participants of the run/walk and the public are encouraged to attend the health fair from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at CCPlus Dance/Fun/Fitness in Mount Clemens. The health fair will offer entertainment, food, a silent auction, yoga and dance demonstrations and more.
“We are encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to join Team OU-Macomb at this year’s event.” said Julie Trube, director of enrollment and community outreach. “This is a fantastic event and a great way for all to show their support of Turning Point and this important cause.”
The Tara Grant Memorial Walk & Run began in 2007 as a way for Grant’s family to share her legacy with others by promoting domestic violence awareness.
Turning Point is an advocacy and support-based organization that enables survivors of domestic and sexual violence to regain control of their lives by eliminating barriers to justice and safety. Since opening in 1980, Turning Point has provided emergency shelter to more than 23,000 women and children, growing from a 24-hour crisis line and 15-bed shelter to providing comprehensive advocacy and counseling services.
