OU community encouraged to run or walk the Brooksie Way

Oakland University students looking to keep up the active lifestyle that the summer months afforded have a great opportunity with the upcoming Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K event.
University faculty, staff, alumni and supporters are also encouraged to participate.

This year's race, set for Sunday, Sept. 30, will have participants embark from university grounds onto a scenic route that winds through local golf courses, parks, and biking and hiking trails along minor waterways in Rochester and Rochester Hills. Those looking to prepare can also take advantage of a practice run and walk set for 8 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 16.

"The Brooksie Way is an outstanding example of a fun, healthy way for the community to come together to support healthy lifestyles," President Gary D. Russi said. "The Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K attracts thousands of participants and receives widespread community support. We are proud to partner with the Brooksie Way team."

As a result of the partnership between the university and Brooksie Way planners, as well as a university commitment to promote employee health, significant discounts are being made available.

Through Monday, Sept. 10, OU employees can receive a discounted entry fee of $26 for the half marathon or participate in the 5K at no cost. There is a $5 fee per family to participate in a one-mile event, and groups of 5-10 employees who wish to participate in the Team Challenge program can receive $50 toward registration fees.

Complementing the race event, the Brooksie Way Fitness Expo will be held in the Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29. Admission is free and is open to the entire university community.
