OU's charter schools excel in report of Michigan public schools

Two of Oakland University’s charter schools excelled in the recent Context and Performance (CAP) report, placing in the top three of Michigan public high schools.
Star International Academy, a charter in the Dearborn Heights suburbs, ranked first overall with a CAP score of 140.8 percent, followed by Universal Academy, Detroit, which came in third with a score of 133.8 percent.
The CAP report card is a measure of the schools' projected standardized testing scores based on the percent of students that qualify for free or reduced lunches, versus the actual test results. Schools can earn higher than a one hundred percent if they exceeded the projected performance.
“We couldn’t have done this without the committed staff, stakeholders, and support of our number one authorizer, Oakland University,” said Nawal Hamadeh, superintendent and founder of both charter schools.
According to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, earning a high score on the CAP report improves the quality of public information about the individual school that is available to taxpayers, parents, school officials and policy makers.
“It’s about addressing the needs of each student in order to help them reach their true potential,” said Mildred Taylor, director of the office of Public School Academies and Urban Partnerships. “It’s the school leadership and instructional staff that have become the difference-makers in the lives of their students.”
OU’s office of Public School Academies and Urban Partnerships has been working since 1996 to provide tuition-free public schools that offer its students a high level of educational quality.
Today, the university is an authorizer to ten schools that house more than 6,000 students in Wayne and Oakland counties.
