Journal’s special issue on Civil Rights Act anniversary to feature SBA professors’ paper

Longtime research collaborators Lizabeth Barclay and Karen Markel of OU’s SBA recently learned that one of their latest research projects, a review paper on religious discrimination, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Business and Psychology’s special issue on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

The professors co-wrote their paper, “Religious Discrimination in the Workplace: A Review and Examination of Current and Future Trends,” with Sonia Ghumman, assistant professor of management, University of Hawaii-Manoa, and Ann Marie Ryan, professor of organizational psychology, Michigan State University. The journal’s special issue will be published in 2013.

Both Barclay, a professor of management, and Markel, associate professor of management, and director of business programs and strategic initiatives, have extensive research experience. They began working as a team in 2001.

Their paper focuses on psychological and human resources practitioner-focused research on religious persecution as it relates to the Civil Rights Act. The authors’ goal was to show where future research is needed and to point out the challenges and practical implications of religious discrimination for managers.

“This issue of the Journal of Business and Psychology called for ‘broad, integrative papers,’ and we are pleased that, with our co-authors, we have been able to deliver a manuscript that will allow scholars and practitioners to reflect on ways to deal with increasing diversity at work,” Barclay says. “We believe that readers of this contribution will find this thought-provoking.”
