Free training program to prepare runners for Brooksie Way
Oakland University employees interested in participating in the popular Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K are eligible for a free training program to help get in shape.
Campus Recreation will accept the first 30 people to sign up for the training program and will divide participants into walking, run/walking and running groups. Sessions will meet during the noon hour or after 5 p.m. and will last for up to 45 minutes.
Training groups will begin to meet on Monday, Aug. 6. To register for the training program, click here.
This year's Brooksie Way is set for Sunday, Sept. 30, and will have participants embark from university grounds onto a scenic route that winds through local golf courses, parks, and biking and hiking trails along minor waterways in Rochester and Rochester Hills.
As a result of the partnership between the university and Brooksie Way planners, as well as a university commitment to promote employee health, significant discounts are being made available.
Through Monday, Sept. 10, OU employees can receive a discounted entry fee of $26 for the half marathon or participate in the 5K at no cost. There is a $5 fee per family to participate in a one-mile event, and groups of 5-10 employees who wish to participate in the Team Challenge program can receive $50 toward registration fees. Discounts are available for benefits-eligible employees and part time faculty.
"The Brooksie Way is an outstanding example of a fun, healthy way for the community to come together to support healthy lifestyles," President Gary D. Russi said. "The Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K attracts thousands of participants and receives widespread community support. We are proud to partner with the Brooksie Way team."
Complementing the race event, the Brooksie Way Fitness Expo will be held in the Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday September 28-29. Admission is free and is open to the entire university community.

University employees interested in participating should download an event registration form and submit it to Campus Recreation Director Greg Jordan at ext. 4888 or jordan@oakland.edu for more information.
