Free concert to showcase OU's Steel Band and African Ensemble

The campus community is invited to ring in summer with the eclectic musical sounds of Oakland University’s Steel Band and African Ensemble on Tuesday, June 19. This free concert will be held from noon – 1 p.m. outdoors on the Oakland Center patio. 

Guided by OU music instructor Mark Stone, the two groups are comprised of OU students who will present selections learned during summer music courses. The African Ensemble, “Akwaaba,” will perform various compositions on the Ugandan xylophone. Known as the embaire, this instrument is one of the largest xylophones in the world. 

The Steel Band, dubbed the “Pan-Jumbies,” will showcase the Caribbean-style music of noted Trinidadian composer Ray Holman. To view a performance of the African Drum Ensemble and Steel Band, view the Oakland Post video below.
