IT management degree offers professionals opportunity to advance

The School of Business Administration at Oakland University is accepting applications from information technology professionals interested in pursuing a master's degree program that will enhance their career opportunities in a rapidly expanding market.

The new Masters of Science in Information Technology Management with a business analytics track prepares IT professionals to gather, analyze and leverage crucial data and information from a host of sources including the Internet and social media.

The global marketing intelligence firm IDC has forecast that the business analytics field will expand by 7 percent or more over the next 10 years. In order to take advantage of this, however, McKinsey & Company suggests that companies and individual IT professionals must be prepared to employ analysis techniques and technologies from fields including statistics, computer science, applied mathematics and economics.

"This means that an organization that intends to derive value from very large pools of data has to adopt a flexible, multidisciplinary approach," McKinsey & Company advises. "It also means that the IT professional who can help the organization realize significant value from its data must be trained anew in order to do so."

Students in Oakland's MSITM program can obtain their degree in one year by completing half of the 10 required courses online and the other half on campus. All participants in the program, which will begin in July, can enroll at the in-state tuition rate.
