OU to host 20th annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition

Robotics teams from around the world will gather at Oakland University next week for the 20th annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC).

The teams will use their intelligent ground vehicle creations to compete in four different categories: autonomous, design, navigation and Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems. Competitors who hold the best scores throughout these four competitions will have a chance to win the Grand Award trophy. Additionally, awards will also be given to the Rookie-of-the-Year.

In the 2012 competition, more than $70,000 will be awarded to those teams placing first through sixth place in each competition. About $15,000 of the Nominal Award money will also be given to the top six teams in each category.  

The competition offers a design experience that is at the very cutting edge of engineering education. It is multidisciplinary, theory-based, hands-on, team implemented, outcome assessed, and based on product realization, according to the official IGVC site.

Teams utilize current technologies such as electrical and mechanical engineering and computer science. These vehicles and technologies also have many real-world applications. Military mobility, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and manufacturing all use intelligent ground vehicles. 

This event is sponsored by several organizations including Lockheed Martin, Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise, and WID. 

The competition will take place Friday, June 8, through Monday, June 11, in the grassy fields on the southwest corner of Walton and Adams.
