OU's engineering management program to be offered online
The School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University will offer its popular and successful master of science in engineering management program in a fully online format beginning in 2013.
Provided in cooperation with the School of Business Administration, the program is intended for students with a bachelor's degree in any field of engineering who want to move into management positions in their profession. The online format is ideal for professionals working in industry and looking to advance.
"There's a huge push in industry for alternative instruction delivery methods, and we've got a mature and successful program that's ready to go online," said Robert Van Til, chair of OU's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
"We have a long tradition of working with students studying part-time and working full time in industry. We're close to the real world, and this is a way for us to reach out to people working in it."
The program's goal is to provide the tools and skills necessary for making sound management decisions for industry and business in general while retaining a commitment to a specialized field. As an advantage to out-of-state and international students, in-state tuition rates have been approved for all students taking advantage of the on-line format.
Students entering the program will complete a total of 10 courses, roughly half of which focus on engineering. The other half will focus on business management. Courses will be offered throughout the academic year, and an asynchronous program format allows for flexibility in scheduling. Enrolling in two courses per semester, students can complete the program in as little as two years while working full time.
Although Oakland is looking to expand its reach with this online program offering, Van Til explained that doing so will in no way compromise the high quality of the in-class program that so many working engineers in southeastern Michigan have come to respect and demand.
"We're uniquely positioned to offer the in-class program for students who still want to have that experience, and we will definitely maintain our focus on continuing to offer a top-notch, in-class program."
