Summer courses focus on creativity, interdisciplinary discussion
This summer, Oakland University will offer a wide variety of courses designed to help students fulfill academic requirements and explore their creative interests.
The summer I session will bring an opportunity for students to apply creativity and innovative thinking to a variety of questions and problems. LBS 100: Exploration of Arts and Sciences will help students develop an interdisciplinary perspective, using insights from all academic areas to enhance problem-solving skills.
Taught by Cynthia Sifonis, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, the four-credit course will focus on the theme of “Creativity across the Disciplines.” Along with examining course texts, students will engage in writing exercises and listen to various talks on creative expression.
To apply what they’ve learned, students will select a creative topic – such as body art or music improvisation – and teach it to the class using an interdisciplinary approach.

Among the classes to be offered this summer at the newly opened Anton/Frankel Center in Mount Clemens will be Anthony Guest’s THA 100: Intro to Theatre. The four-credit course, which satisfies the general education requirement in arts, will introduce students to the world of theatre production and analysis.
Each week, students will attend a professional show and discuss how each play fits into a broader context. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students will examine the production from a historical, social and political perspective. Other subjects will also be discussed, such as genre, art, psychology and sociology.
By experiencing live performances, students will learn about the conventions and protocols of theatre and gain an appreciation of the details involved in staging a professional show.
