With most of our regular undergraduates gone from the campus this summer, the Music, Theatre and Dance faculty have time to devote to potential future students and to community members with an interest in the performing arts. We are offering an exciting and challenging slate of intensives and workshops led by our expert and inspiring teachers.
On Saturday, May 5 high school brass musicians are invited to attend a free
Brass Day led by OU’s
Dr. Kenneth Kroesche and guest conductor and soloist
Helen Tyler, principal baritone horn player of the Fountain City Brass Band of Kansas City. The day will include a breathing gym and group warm-up session, a reading session and ensemble skills session, a clinic and sectionals with OU brass faculty and students, a brass band rehearsal and a concert.

On Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, jazz musicians from junior high through adult can sign up for an opportunity to work with renowned jazz violinist
Regina Carter and the OU jazz faculty at the annual
Jazz Workshop. The fee is $60 with a non-refundable $5 registration fee. The program will include a faculty concert, a listening class with Regina Carter, an improvisation clinic, a steel drums session, a combo session and an informal performance. OU faculty

High school-aged guitar players are invited to
Guitar Workshop held on Saturday, June 2. There is a $20 fee. The schedule will include classes on how to become a major or minor in music with guitar as your instrument, classical guitar technique and exercises, the basics of how to read music, classical guitar pieces, jazz and guitar technique, the basics of improvisation, jazz standards and popular music songs. All high school musicians are invited to the first annual OU
Summer Band Intensive which will run from Sunday, June 17 to Friday, June 22. The fee is $375 for commuters and $495 for students who wish to stay on campus. The intensive will focus on technique classes, sectional rehearsals, full band rehearsals, and finish with a concert performance. OU faculty

George Stoffan will lead the sessions, alongside DSO-affiliated OU faculty and guest conductor, nationally recognized composer

From Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 29 the theatre faculty will offer a variety of
Summer Theatre Arts Workshops for community members and others aged 16 and over. Workshops include: Costume Design Basics, Stage Management, Mask Making, Unarmed Stage Combat, Improvisational Acting, Dance Styles for Musical Theatre and Auditioning. Each of these workshops costs $80, except Mask Making which at $90 includes all materials. Anyone registering for more than one workshop receives a small discount for each additional class. Musicians aged 12 – 17 who play string instruments are invited to OU’s Music Preparatory Division’s
Summer Strings Camp running from Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29. The fee is $350 with a registration fee of $20. The program offers a collegiate, yet intimate, chamber rehearsal setting that enables attentive interaction with OU faculty and instructors and includes daily theory intensives, orchestra rehearsals, and workshops in world music and improvisation, culminating in a concert. Participating instructors include
Jenine Brown, Miles Brown, Nadine Deleury, Joan Hovda, Alan R. MacNair, Elizabeth Rowin, Nicole Shogren and
Judith Teasdle.

From Monday, July 9 to Friday, July 20, the annual
Great Lakes Dance Festival will be joining forces with the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble (EDE) to bring experienced dancers 16 and older an amazing summer dance experience. The festival will include classes taught by EDE dancers, as well as other guest artists, and will culminate with a showcase performance. The fee is $530 or $505 if registered by June 6. An optional on-campus residence plan is available for an extra fee.

From Monday, July 16 to Friday, July 20 young musicians aged 12 to 18 are invited to learn more about the musical language of Classical composers as they enjoy a
Theory and Composition Workshop. The fee is $200. Students will learn music theory concepts by creating compositions using the work of Mozart as a model.

The final workshop of the summer begins on Monday, July 23 and ends Friday, July 27. It is also perfect for young musicians aged 12 to 18 and has a fee of $200.
Creative Computer Workshop will offer students the opportunity to use the university’s music computer lab to begin compositions they will be able to continue working on at home. They will learn about editing music, looping sounds and recording live music. Both of these last two workshops of the summer are taught by
Jenine Brown.
