Zissimos P. Mourelatos, Ph.D, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has won two Colwell Merit Awards from the Society for Automotive Engineers for his papers “Piston Design Using Multi-Objective Reliability-Based Design Optimization” and “Time-Dependent Reliability Estimation for Dynamic Systems Using a Random Process Approach.” Papers are judged for their value as contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering, and primarily with respect to their value as an original contribution to the subject matter. “One of the highest and most satisfying honors for a researcher is to be recognized by his peers,” Dr. Mourelatos said. “Being selected twice among thousands of authors for the SAE International 2010 Arch T. Colwell Merit Award is a personal honor and a notable recognition of Oakland University’s continuous research efforts in the area of Automotive Engineering.” Before joining Oakland University, Dr. Mourelatos spent 18 years at the General Motors Research and Development Center. He received his Ph.D. in 1985 from The University of Michigan. He conducts research in the areas of design under uncertainty, structural reliability methods, reliability analysis with insufficient data, Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO), vibrations and dynamics, and NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). |

Dr. Mourelatos has published one book, 5 book chapters and over 140 journal and conference articles. He is a member of SAE, ASME and AIAA, the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Reliability and Safety, an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design, an Associate Editor of the SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing, and a SAE Fellow. In addition to his most recent Cowell Merit Awards, Dr. Mourelatos is also the recipient of the SAE Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker award and the SAE Forest R. McFarland award. Dr. Mourelatos received formal recognition at the 2012 SAE World Congress during the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 24, at Cobo Hall in Detroit. |
