GrizzlyPalooza concert to feature rap rock band Gym Class Heroes
Oakland University’s Student Program Board will present the second edition of “GrizzlyPalooza,” an eclectic mix of music headlined by New York-based rap rock band Gym Class Heroes.
Set for Thursday, April 12, at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on Oakland’s campus, the event will kick off at 7 p.m., with a performance by local artist and OU student Drew “Drew 32” Parks. Upstart music acts the New Boyz, Kreayshawn, and Kirko Bangz will also take the stage.
Formed in 1997 by childhood friends Travie McCoy and Matt McGinley, Gym Class Heroes features a unique blend of elements, including hip hop, funk, rap and reggae. Recently, the group reunited and released their latest album, "The Papercut Chronicles II."
The New Boyz is a hip-hop duo comprised of rappers Earl “Ben J” Benjamin and Dominic “Legacy” Thomas. The group initially gained fame in 2009 with their hit song “You’re a Jerk,” the first single from their debut studio album "Skinny Jeanz and a Mic."
Kreayshawn, whose real name is Natassia Zolot, is an artist and music video director whose video for her single “Gucci Gucci” became an internet sensation, helping the California native land a contract with Columbia Records. In 2011, Kreayshawn was nominated for “Best New Artist” in the MTV Video Music Awards.
Signed to Warner Bros. Records, 22-year-old rapper Kirko Bangz (Kirk Randle) burst onto the music scene with his first single titled “What Yo Name Iz” which debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop chart in October 2010. His follow-up single “Drank in My Cup” was released in September 2011 and appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
GrizzlyPalooza tickets are $15 for OU students, staff and alumni and $25 for the general public. They are on sale at the Center for Student Activities Service Window (49 Oakland Center) and at ticketmaster.com.
