Symposium to empower women, address current issues

Oakland University is set to host the 2012 Oakland Symposium “Empowering Women in the Global Community” on Wednesday, March 21. This day-long event will be keynoted by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheryl WuDunn and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of workshops, panel discussions and entertainment.
Internationally-recognized experts will address an array of topics, including sex trafficking, social challenges and racism, women with disabilities, global perspectives, empowerment through the legal system, women in politics and media, women in poverty, religious perspectives and women in business.
The symposium also features an “OU Dream Day” networking session, a private benefit dinner at Meadow Brook Hall and a “GrizzPosé” fashion show fundraiser. Proceeds from these events will be donated to Schools for India, a nonprofit organization that builds schools and promotes community development in the region.
This year’s Oakland Symposium is sponsored by the Oakland University Student Congress, with support from the Student Activities Fund Assessment Committee, Dean of Students office, Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Provost and Office of the President.
