2012 Gorlin Lecture to feature best-selling author Sylvia Nasar

By Katie Land, news editor

Best-selling author and noted professor Sylvia Nasar will deliver the School of Business Administration's 22nd Gorlin Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26, in the Varner Recital Hall.

Nasar is known for the elegance of her prose and her mega-bestselling biography, “A Beautiful Mind,” which tells the story of John Nash, the Princeton mathematical genius who suffered from schizophrenia for three decades before recovering and winning a Nobel Prize in economics. Her award-winning book was turned into the Academy Award winning film starring Russell Crowe.

Nasar recently published "Grand Pursuit: The Story of Economic Genius in Modern Times," which has received rave reviews since its release. The book, which chronicles the development of modern economics from Victorian England to modern India, will serve as the topic of the author's lecture at OU.

In addition to showing how big economic ideas have allowed mankind to transcend much of the deprivation and misery of the recent past, Nasar will discuss the notion that through an ideological revolution, the bottom nine-tenths of humanity could escape poverty and nations could shape their own destinies.

Nasar is currently the co-director of the Masters of Arts in Business Journalism program at Columbia University, and serves as the first John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Business Journalism at the university.

A former economic correspondent for The New York Times, Nasar was also a staff writer at Fortune and a columnist for U.S. News and World Report. Her work has been featured in high profile publications such as Newsweek and The New Yorker magazine.

The Gorlin Lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. To reserve a seat, contact Stacey Frankovich at frankovi@oakland.edu. OU students, faculty and board members do not need to register to attend.

Named for the late Alice Conner Gorlin, an esteemed professor of economics at Oakland, the Gorlin Memorial Lecture is designed to promote a wider understanding of international issues and events.
