Oakland University’s Men’s Ice Hockey Club team is hanging up its skates after a successful season that culminated in a trip to the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s National Championships.
While the team’s run in the Final Four ended last night in a 5-1 loss to the third-ranked University of Delaware, the season offered much to be proud of, according to Greg Jordan, director of the Department of Campus Recreation.
“The OU men’s ice hockey club has established a strong tradition in a very short period of time,” Jordan continued. “We have been blessed with a series of outstanding students who dedicated so much of themselves to successfully meeting the challenges of such a high level of competition, while balancing their academic and financial responsibilities.”
“We are further blessed with a series of outstanding coaches and general managers who have provided a consistent level of leadership, oversight and passion in making Oakland one of the most successful programs in the past decade.”
OU’s Division 1 squad celebrated a 5-3 upset over the favored Penn State University team in the semi-finals, earning them a dramatic victory and national media attention. This particular win means a lot to the team, as the PSU team is moving into varsity status next year.
“I think Oakland has Penn State’s number,” Jordan said. “It’s a tremendous credit to the OU program that we have dominated PSU, as they are historically the top program in the country, and have played in 10 straight championship games.”
The team also clinched the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League regular season title, and earned a 3-2 victory over rival Davenport University in their traditional Good Luck Duck series.
