Model UN team rakes in awards at international conference

By Eric Reikowski, media relations assistant

OU's Model United Nations team earned several awards at the recent North American Model UN Conference, held in Toronto.
Oakland University’s Model United Nations team continued its string of impressive performances at the North American Model UN Conference held this February at the University of Toronto.

Out of 16 OU students who participated, five claimed individual honors. Three were named “Best Delegate” on their respective committees. Sean Cannady earned top delegate for representing Pakistan on the Disarmament and Security Committee, while Alex Green represented Israel on the Legal Committee and Justin Clarke played the role of U.S. ambassador in a Mexican drug war simulation.

The competition drew more than 20 schools from the U.S. and Canada.

“These events help students by engaging them directly in debates on international issues and asking them to step out of their comfort zones and assume the role of a foreign country,” said Dr. Paul Kubicek, professor of political science. “We had students representing Iran, Mexico, Kenya, Israel, Pakistan, Lebanon, Egypt, China, Germany and France.”

As Model UN team coach, Dr. Kubicek teaches a two-credit political science course that helps students prepare for competition by learning the rules of debate and honing their public speaking skills.

“Our delegates were well-prepared on the rules and on the topics,” Dr. Kubicek said. “One might say that we won more than our share of awards given the number of awards available.”

Model UN is open to students of all majors. For more on Oakland’s Model UN team, contact Dr. Kubicek at kubicek@oakland.edu.
