Oakland University’s International Relations program plans to bring a worldly perspective to campus with the debut of the new Meadow Brook Lecture in International Affairs.
Set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at Meadow Brook Hall, the lecture will feature Dr. John Mueller, a leading national figure on international security and terrorism and professor of political science at Ohio State University.
This event will center on the contemporary impact and perception of terrorism, and will offer a relevant and interesting take on national issues for the Oakland community and the community at large.
“It is valuable for students to be exposed, first-hand, to important scholars and thinkers in their field of study,” said Paul Kubicek, Ph.D., political science professor and director of the International Studies program.
“In this case, Dr. Mueller is an established figure on questions of international security and terrorism. His talk will be - we suspect -of wide interest. Moreover, we think it is important for Oakland to be a venue where people can come to learn about important issues.”
Dr. Mueller’s talk, “The Terrorism Delusion,” will focus on modern terrorism and particularly on the reactions and over-reactions it inspires. As a relevant voice in debates on the “war on terror” and in the policy community, Dr. Mueller argues that the U.S. exaggerates threats from groups like Al Qaeda.
“Many of our students who are taking classes in international politics and in classes on terrorism and security will benefit most from this talk, but we anticipate a diverse group of students and members of the community will attend,” Dr. Kubicek continued.
Dr. Mueller is the author of 18 books, including the critically-acclaimed “Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Threats and Why We Believe Them,” as well as dozens of scholarly journal articles. He has also appeared on leading TV programs such as “The Daily Show with John Stewart” and “The O’Reilly Factor.”
Prior to the lecture, Dr. Mueller will meet with students at a dinner sponsored by the Model United Nations club and also at a breakfast the next morning, which is sponsored by Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society.
Organizers plan to make the Meadow Brook Lecture in International Affairs an annual event. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Political Science, Model United Nations, and Pi Sigma Alpha.
The lecture is free and open to the public. To learn more about the event, view the flyer. For more information about programs in Oakland’s Department of Political Science, view the website.
