OU's Social Work program set to expand into Macomb in fall 2012

By Katie Land, news editor

Oakland University’s newly accredited Social Work program is already expanding its offerings and geographic boundaries into downtown Mount Clemens. The Bachelor of Social Work program is set to launch at the Anton/Frankel Center in fall 2012.

The Macomb program will run the same way as its counterpoint on Oakland’s main campus. Students will enter the social work program in their junior year, offered in a cohort format that enables students to complete the program in two years.

“In this economy, it is important to provide quality, economical educational solutions for people,” said Lisa Dalton, Ph.D. and director of OU’s Social Work program. “We need to look at new and different ways to reach a changing population. This is one way to do it.”

The BSW program is geared for students that have completed all prerequisites, which can be achieved at the main campus in Rochester, at the OU Anton/Frankel Center, at a local community college, or as a community college partnership student, which allows students to complete coursework at any OU location, at any location of the selected community college or through online courses at both institutions.

Initially 15-20 students will be admitted into the program. The courses will be taught by the same instructors and will utilize the same curriculum as those on the main campus. Students at the Anton/Frankel Center will also benefit by being located near several facilities where students may complete their required internship.

“By offering programs in growing job fields, such as social work, OU is able to serve, attract and recruit students that would not otherwise be willing or able to commute to Rochester,” said Julie Trube, director of Enrollment and Community Outreach for Oakland University-Macomb.

“Approximately one-third of OU's student population is from Macomb County. With the increasing competition for Macomb County students, it is important that OU establish itself as Macomb County's preferred university.”
