Two persons of interest identified in dorm room theft case
The Oakland University Police Department has identified two persons of interest profiled last week relative to thefts that took place in Hamlin Hall on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 10. A laptop, two iPods and a student’s purse with ID were stolen from an unlocked dorm room after a fire alarm was wrongfully activated as a diversion. A second dorm room also was illegally entered.
The OUPD obtained surveillance camera images of the two subjects and released the images to the campus community and local news media. Broadcast of the images on local television aided significantly in identifying the subjects, neither of whom is an OU student. Both subjects have been banned from campus and police are pursuing criminal charges in the case.
The OUPD reminds all residential students to keep their dorm rooms locked at any time the rooms are unoccupied, as well as when residents are sleeping.
Students victimized by theft or any other crime, as well as students possessing information related to any crime, are encouraged to contact police by calling ext. 3331 via a campus telephone or (248) 370-3331 via cell phone. Those in emergency situations should dial 911.
Surveillance camera images of the two subjects released to the campus community and local news media helped significantly in the identification process.
