Academy Award winning director to speak, screen film at OU
Oakland University will host Academy Award winning director and acclaimed photographer Louie Psihoyos to speak on campus, offering insight and sharing his experiences as an activist and filmmaker on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Psihoyos gained international attention for his 2009 feature-length documentary, “The Cove,” described as a tense, provocative, and highly entertaining film that investigates covert dolphin hunting practices in Japan. An experienced scuba diver, Psihoyos and his team went to extreme lengths to shoot the piece, pioneering new techniques for documentary filmmaking.
The first event, a “conversation with the director,” is set for 3 p.m. in 204 O’Dowd Hall, where Psihoyos will discuss his film career and answer questions from the audience. Attendees are encouraged to watch “The Cove” prior to attendance. View the flyer for more information.
Then at 7 p.m., there will be a public screening of “The Cove” in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms, followed by a brief commentary by Psihoyos and an audience question and answer session. This presentation is part of the 2011-2012 College of Arts & Sciences Water-theme Film Series. View the flyer for more information.
“Louie Psihoyos is a great speaker to draw attention to the CAS film series and its theme,” said Kyle Edwards, director of OU’s Cinema Studies program. “The Cove” will spark a good deal of interest from OU students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the surrounding community.”
