Graduates to be honored at commencement ceremonies Dec. 17
Oakland University will honor its August and December graduates at three commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 17, in Oakland’s athletic arena (The O’rena). The ceremony schedule is as follows:
9 a.m. – College of Arts and Sciences
School of Education and Human Services
Bachelor of Integrative Studies
1 p.m. – All masters and doctoral candidates
5 p.m. – School of Business Administration
School of Engineering and Computer Science
School of Nursing
School of Health Sciences
Speakers for the 9 a.m. ceremony will be OU alumni Robert Schostak, CAS ‘78 and Kaniqua Daniel, CAS ‘05. Schostak is CEO of Schostak Brothers and Company Inc. and currently serves as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Daniel is a communications specialist for the POH Riley Foundation.
The speakers for the 1 p.m. ceremony will be OU alumni Bryan Barnett, SBA ‘98 and Donna Weinstein, Ph.D, SEHS ’09. Barnett is the mayor of Rochester Hills, a position he has held since 2006. Dr. Weinstein is a graduate of OU’s doctoral program in counseling and a part-time lecturer for the department .
R. Hugh Elliot, businessman and longtime OU supporter, will receive an honorary degree at the 5 p.m. ceremony. His generous gifts to Oakland have made him the namesake of the Hugh and Nancy Elliot Room in the O’rena and Elliot Hall of Business and Information Technology. Denise Ann Taylor, SBA ’91, business development executive at Now Hire, will be the alumni speaker.
Vocal Performance major Taylor Boykins will perform the national anthem at all three ceremonies.
Doors to the O’rena will be open for guests half an hour before each ceremony. All guests must have tickets and should be seated 15 minutes prior to the processional.
Those planning to attend graduation should review the campus map and parking information. Parking is free and open to the public, except where indicated. In case of inclement weather, information will be available by calling (248) 370-2000 or by tuning in to WWJ or WJR radio stations or Fox2, WDIV-TV or WXYZ-TV.
Each ceremony will be interpreted in sign language. Guests with other special needs should call the Office of the Provost at (248) 370-2190.
