Oakland University is now offering a new and unique cultural arts study abroad program to Ghana, West Africa, through the Center for International Programs and the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance.
The 26-day summer program – which runs July 9 through Aug. 3, 2012 – will focus on studying the rich visual and performing art traditions of Ghana.
“The program will take place at the Dagara Music Center, located just outside the capital of Accra,” said Mark Stone, coordinator of OU’s World Music and Percussion program. “At the center, students will study African music, dance, history and language. We will also travel to visit castles of Ghana's coast and Kakum National Park, as well as travel to cultural sites in Northern Ghana.”
“Oakland University is prioritizing the internationalization of the campus,” said Professor Brian Connery, director of OU’s Study Abroad/International Education program. “International study allows students to broaden horizons, become citizens of the world and develop personal resources.”
The Ghana program is one of 22 programs offered in 19 countries through Oakland University’s Study Abroad office. These faculty-led programs include study in Beijing, China; Costa Rica; Hydra, Greece; and Oxford, England. Semester-long exchange programs include Nagoya, Japan; Orleans, France; Dunedin, New Zealand; and Oldenburg, Germany.
Oakland University also offers study abroad programs through affiliates AHA International and JCMU (Japanese Center for Michigan Universities) to 19 countries, including, Argentina, Australia, Austria, China, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Morocco and Spain. Programs run for weeks, a month, a semester or a full-year.
“OU programs are economical, provide the comfort of familiar faculty and students, and are OU credit hours with no transfer problems,” Connery said. “Scholarships are available to help make programs more affordable, and financial aid may be applied to international programs.”
Applications are now being accepted for summer 2012 programs.
“The summer programs are appealing because they are shorter and cheaper,” Connery said. “They also allow steady progress toward completion of a degree.”
Most study abroad programs are at the 200-300 level for second- to third-year students.
“Guest students are welcome to participate in programs and can transfer credit back to their home university,” Connery said.
