OU professor to discuss children's literature at national conference
For Oakland University’s Linda Pavonetti, Ph.D., tall tales and children’s myths play an important role in inspiring a love for learning and reading in young people.
It is her passion and extensive experience in the field that has propelled her to speak at the annual convention for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) this November in Chicago.
Each year, the NCTE Annual Convention draws thousands of K-12 teachers, college faculty, administrators, and other educational professionals from around the world. They gather to hear award-winning speakers, attend idea-packed sessions, share best practices, participate in workshops, and test the latest teaching materials.
Dr. Pavonetti will present "Censorship, Challenges, and Choice," as part of a larger panel discussion that will explore several contemporary topics pertinent in children’s literature today.
The panel is made up of Children's Literature Assembly members who together wrote the book, "A Master's Class in Children's Literature: Trends and Issues in an Evolving Field," which was published by NCTE. Each member will discuss the material covered in the chapter they authored. Topics include the uses and abuses of children's literature, reader response, multicultural and international literature, bestsellers, children's literature courses, book illustration and design, and censorship.
At OU, the associate professor and chair of the Department of Reading and Language Arts teaches several courses dedicated to her field, such as Literature for Children, The Author’s and Illustrator’s Art and Craft, Foundations of Literature for Children and Young Adults, Adolescent Literature in Middle Schools, Jr. and Senior High Schools.
Dr. Pavonetti is quite active outside of the university as well. She has just published "Bridges to Understanding: Envisioning the World Through Children's Eyes" in conjunction with her work as a past president of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) and a current vice-president of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Dr. Pavonetti has also served in various roles for NCTE including chair of the Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts committee and a variety of positions for Children’s Literature Assembly.
The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English.
