Memorial-vigil for campus community set for Friday, Nov. 4

A memorial-vigil open to all members of the Oakland University community will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, in the Oakland Room of the Oakland Center.

The memorial-vigil allows for the friends of Jenna Balabuch, Rachel Ring, and Shannon Waite to come together to share remembrances and support. In addition to an opportunity to remember and honor Jenna and Rachel in the wake of their tragic deaths on Saturday, Oct. 22, this event rallies support and hope for the recovery of Shannon Waite, who was critically injured and still in serious condition as she works toward recovery.

The vigil is being organized by several members of the Oakland family, including the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society and Department of English.

“Jenna and Rachel have left us far too early, but we can honor their lives by remembering them with love, and by providing comfort and support to those who loved them. We can also support Shannon and her family by keeping them in our thoughts and prayers,” said OU President Gary Russi in a letter to the campus community.

The university has also made available free counseling resources so that anyone who needs to can talk to a professional counselor to help deal with their grief and loss. The Counseling Center can be reached at (248) 370-3465.
