Pick up a PAL in the ERL! New Laptop Loan Program For Fall 2011 Semester

Need to work on a computer, but there’s no place to sit in the ERL? Pick up a PAL!   Need to take a laptop to class? Pick up a PAL!  In response to student requests, the ERL has initiated a new program which allows students to borrow laptops for use beyond the doors of the ERL.

We have designated 10 laptops, called PALs, that students can check out for use in other areas of the building for those times when the ERL is full, when students need to work in a classroom, or if they just want to sit on the couches in the hall or near the vending machines.These are specially marked computers - with Pawley, the dog - that we have chosen for this program, so if you need to leave the ERL with a laptop, make sure you have checked out a PAL. Our regular laptops may not be taken out of the ERL, past the security system.

Our PAL machines are clearly marked and may be checked out at the circulation desk using your GRIZ ID. Just look for a picture of Pawley to assure you have the right kind. Your PAL will be given to you in a case along with a power cord so that you can plug-in wherever you decide to work for the day. PAL computers are able to access the internet and have basic word-processing software installed. Rules for borrowing PALs are available at the circulation desk, posted on our web page, and are included in the carrying bag with the computer. PALs must be returned to the ERL at the close of the day, so it is important to check our daily schedule. If for some reason you are unable to make it back in time before we close, special arrangements must be made in advance to avoid fines.

Our PAL loan program is a first for the ERL, so we consider this a trial period. We are anxious to see if there is a demand for laptops which can rove and if they are returned promptly and properly. If you have any questions or suggestions about the program, we welcome your feedback.
