Each year, the Oakland University Alumni Association (OUAA) hosts its Alumni Awards Banquet to honor distinguished OU graduates and other university community members for noteworthy achievements in business, community service, volunteerism and more.
This year's event -- set for Saturday, Nov. 5, in the Oakland Center banquet rooms on OU's campus -- will recognize long time SBA supporter and Board of Visitors member Tim Healy with an Honorary Alumni Award. This award honors individuals who have not graduated from OU, but who have given outstanding service to the university.
The SBA's nomination for Healy's award notes that the contributions of Healy and his wife, Marsha, have helped transform the SBA into a strong scholastic community poised to change students' lives, right down to the addition of the Healy Cafe in Elliott Hall.
His involvement with the SBA is both personal and professional. Healy recently retired as president and COO of TK Holdings, Inc. – Takata, where he currently acts as an executive advisor. His philanthropy and volunteered time has provided enormous opportunity for SBA students. He has personally supported the International Initiatives Program, giving business students a unique and invaluable educational experience that allows them to learn abroad.
A member of the SBA's Board of Visitors for nine years, Healy has encouraged a successful relationship between the SBA and TK Holdings. Thanks to his involvement, Takata has supported the SBA’s undergraduate and graduate experiential learning programs, and university golf outings. Healy has also facilitated recruitment and hiring of OU students.
“Tim’s insight and guidance on how to develop our students into leaders of the global business world has proven invaluable, and OU is fortunate to receive his counsel and expertise,” says SBA Dean Mohan Tanniru.
In a 2008 article for SBA Insight, Healy says that the decision to support the SBA was an easy one, since he believes in what the school is doing.
"OU’s business school has been aggressive in continuing to get students in real-world business situations," he says in the article.
Healy has good things to say about SBA Dean Mohan Tanniru, who he met in the early 2000s, when Tanniru was the director of the SBA’s Applied Technology in Business (ATiB) program. Healy was impressed with Tanniru's efforts to place Oakland business students with area companies, where they completed projects under the guidance of an OU professor.
"When I saw that, I knew it tied into the mission of the school to give students knowledge of the business world on a global basis," Healy says. "It made sense to me."
