Northern Michigan alumni gather in Traverse City

On Thursday, September 29, 2011, 21 northern Michigan alumni and friends attended the Traverse City Gathering on top of the Park Place Hotel.  AAAP ambassador, Lynne Lombard ’84, who recommended the Park Place Hotel, shared her experience of how she stays involved with the university while living four hours north of campus. Alumni had the chance to socialize and network, and discussed how they could remain engaged with their alma mater within an alumni network. Luke Fleer, associate director of Alumni Engagement, gave campus updates and provided information on how alumni can participate in future opportunities. Denae May, coordinator of the Alumni Admissions Ambassador Program, shared information on the AAAP volunteer program.

A diverse array of OU alums from graduation years 1971-2011 were able to connect and share stories. Melissa Winn '78, '81 shared her OU story while reminiscing about a photo that she stumbled across a few months back. The photo was taken by her parents of her as a young girl perched on a sign "Future home of MSU - Oakland" on Squirrel and Walton in Rochester in the mid 1950's. Raja Asava, longtime TC resident and Sr. Financial Consultant connected with John Biedron, a recent MBA graduate who just moved back to the area.

This is the first OUAA outreach in northern Michigan and alumni were thrilled and eager to meet one another and are looking forward to future opportunities in Traverse City.
