Students and faculty members from the Counseling Department
in the School of Education and Human Services have been featured in a
number of local news media for their accomplishments and expertise. Graduate student Vishnu Ramsamy was featured in the Detroit News for organizing the Oakland to Oakland Health Walk/Run and Health Fair to benefit Pontiac’s Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic,
which provides free medical care and dental services to low-income,
uninsured and underinsured families. Ramsamy’s event was inspired by
his own experiences overcoming exceptional medical conditions while a
student at Oakland Community College.
And, an Oakland Post article featured a both a student and a faculty member from the Counseling Department. Counseling graduate student, Tara Michener,
established a new student organization, Students Against Bullying, with
the assistance of faculty adviser, Associate Professor Dr. Michael
Chaney. Michener has published children’s books on topics of self-esteem
and identity, and her new organization aims to bring awareness to
bullying in educational environments at all levels – elementary to

Associate Professor of Counseling, Tom Blume, was featured in this story about the Wall Street plunge by WJBK Fox 2 Detroit. Blume is a practicing marriages and family therapist outside of his work at Oakland University. He was intereviewed in this Fox 2 news segment about the impact a difficult economy has on couples and families.

And, another television news story featured Tobi Russell, who is also a graduate student in Counseling. Tobi, who also works at Oakland Family Services was interviewed by WDIV Local 4, as part of a story about a child abuse case.
