OU Professor’s Work on Urban Educational Issues Featured in Journal, Urban Education

Two works by Oakland University Associate Professor, Dr. Thomas Pedroni, are featured in a special virtual issue of Urban Education.  This edition of the journal was compiled to reflect the theme of this year's European Conference for Educational Research (ECER) in Berlin.

Puneet Bola, of the journal’s publisher, Routledge, Taylor and Francis, says, “From celebrated centres for dynamic change to the less progressive models of a uniform education, cities are the focal point for educational reform and change…”

Both of Dr. Pedroni’s articles touch on themes of urban re-development and its affect on education.

The first, “Urban Shrinkage as a Performance of Whiteness: Neoliberal Urban Restructuring, Education, and Racial Containment in the Post-industrial, Global Niche City” examines development strategies in Detroit. In particular, it focuses on how plans for housing, infrastructure and governance can have implications for social exclusion. The other article, “Neoliberalism, Cities and Education in the Global South/North” is co-authored with Kalervo N. Gulson (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia) and examines the neoliberalism in the reshaping cities and its concurrent effects on educational policy.

Dr. Pedroni is a faculty member in the Department of Teacher Development and Educational Studies in the School of Education and Human Services.
