Eco-Education Efforts Earn a GREEN Educator Award for Dr. Timothy Larrabee

Oakland University Associate Professor Dr. Timothy Larrabee was selected from among thousands of educators who participated in Earth Force and the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) to receive the Inaugural Chevrolet GREEN Educator Award. He is one of only ten educators, nationwide, to be honored.

The awarding organizations say, “...in our estimation, you exemplify the very best of what educators are doing to teach young people to lead efforts to protect our environment. Your work day-in and day-out has been an inspiration to all of us at Earth Force and the GM Foundation. This award is but a small token of our appreciation for your work.”

The GREEN Educator Award program is a joint project between Earth Force and the
GM Foundation to reward educators of all types who have taken an initiative to integrate environmental education into their schools, universities and community programs. The program looks for educators who:

•    Teach about the environment

•    Give young people the chance to lead environmental projects
•    Help young people understand the connection between their civic life and the environment by giving them civic experiences
•    Engage other educators, administrators and community members in projects
•    Encourage others to teach about the environment

Larrabee was a middle school science teacher in California for 13 years, prior to coming to Oakland University in fall of 2004. At Oakland, he oversees the elementary science education program for the
Department of Teacher Development and Educational Studies.

His involvement with Earth Force started in August 2010 when he attended an Earth Force training session and then introduced the curriculum guide to his science methods students that fall. It received such a positive response from pre-service elementary school teachers, that it has now been incorporated in all sections of elementary science methods courses. Larrabee says feedback from both students and lecturers has been very positive and he is excited to provide this unique learning opportunity for OU students so that they can share it with their students.
