Eric Barritt named to lead OU's fundraising, community outreach

Oakland University has announced the appointment of Eric Barritt as vice president for community engagement. By assuming leadership of the University Relations Division, he will oversee all of Oakland's fundraising and community outreach efforts.

Barritt prepared for a successful career in philanthropic leadership by obtaining a bachelor's degree in economics, a master's degree in public administration and a graduate certificate in non-profit management — all from the University of Michigan.

He subsequently acquired a wealth of experience in health care and higher education settings, including roles as corporate vice president of development and campaigns for the Detroit Medical Center, and director of development and major and planned giving for the University of Michigan. Barritt has also held development positions with Oakwood Healthcare System and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"Oakland University is well positioned to see continued growth both in the short term and well into the future, but this won't happen without a strong vision and a work ethic to match." said OU President Gary Russi. "I have every confidence that Eric's leadership skills, expertise and enthusiasm will help us mobilize the support we need to realize our full potential for growth."

Oakland is currently engaged in an ambitious, community-wide strategic planning initiative that will significantly expand efforts to positively impact economic prosperity and quality of life in southeastern Michigan and beyond. The University Relations Division will play a pivotal role in this planning process, and Barritt said he's pleased to have an opportunity to contribute.

"Since joining Oakland, I've seen a tremendous level of excitement about what we can do help fuel Michigan's transition to a knowledge-based, 21st century economy," he said. "I consider it a privilege to join the broad, distinguished and diverse group of people who are working to move this university and the state of Michigan forward."

Outside of his new position at Oakland, Barritt serves as president of the Northville Education Foundation. He and his wife, Erin, live in Northville with their two daughters.
