Take 5 with Lindsay Zeig

“Take 5 with Lindsay Zeig”

Lindsay Zeig is a career and academic advisor and the interim director of the Advising Resource Center. A true Golden Grizzly, she has been a member of the Oakland University community since her undergraduate days, having earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at OU. Lindsay began as a hall director in the Department of Housing about five years ago, and has worked for ARC for the past three years now. She took over the role of ARC’s interim director this summer, but still finds time to meet with individual students, run workshops and plan gala events as well.

1) What responsibilities does your current role encompass?

As a career and academic advisor, I work mostly with students in a variety of settings, from individual to small group sessions. I also teach a Communications 101 course for incoming freshman. My course is unique, as it is part of a living-learning community composed of 22 students who all have undecided majors and who all live on the same floor of Hamlin Hall together. My group of students also takes a number of other classes together and works to achieve a sense of community through their academic peer mentor. This is my fifth year teaching the course, and last year I was able to see my first group graduate. It was wonderful to see that they have remained close through the years and are all still friends.

At the same time, as interim director, I have a number of new tasks and initiatives that I work on, including serving on committees for various projects and working on career exploration and staff development.

2) What type of student benefits most from ARC’s services?

Students who want to fully explore their options. We seek to assist not only undecided students, but any student who may be on the fence regarding their major, or even a student who wants confirmation that they made the right choice. We administer career assessments to help students look at the different possibilities open to them. We try to show a new perspective and compare interests. 

3) Do you have a favorite Michigan season?

Fall, definitely! I love Michigan and the autumn – there is no better time! I love college football, watching the leaves change, taking trips to the cider mill. It’s exciting to have the first few days of cooler weather and to get ready for back-to-school time. It’s the feeling of possibilities that you get in the fall that makes me sure I could never leave Michigan.

4) What is something that all of your family and friends know about you?

I like to do anything active and am pretty competitive. I am a runner and enjoy training for 5K and 10K races and love kick boxing as well. I go to a martial arts kickboxing studio every week and take fitness classes at the OU Rec Center.

5) What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best part of my job is working with students, no doubt about it. We have the best students in the state, hands down. I am passionate about my job and love coming in every day. It is exciting and rewarding to help students find their passions. Finding the right fit for a student is the best part of my day. And I get to dream along with my students. If they want to be an archaeologist, I get to dream about being one too. We learn and explore together.
