Some events scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8, have been postponed because of inclement weather.
Festivities begin on Thursday, Sept. 1. The day features an “Opening Day” Ice Cream Social from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m., outdoors between North and South Foundation Halls. Later, the Association of Black Students and Center for Multicultural Initiatives will co-host a welcome barbeque from 6-9 p.m. at Hamlin Basketball Court. The night rounds out with a yard show sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council from 9-11 p.m. at the Hamlin Basketball Court.
On Friday, Sept. 2, the International Students and Scholars Office will hold a welcome reception from 4-6 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. The Department of Music Theatre and Dance and Actors ‘N’ Techies will present "Dustland Fairytale: A Tribute to the Music of the Killers," at 8 p.m. at the Varner Studio Theatre, located in Varner Hall. Additional performances are scheduled during the week.
Following Labor Day Recess, a media open house spotlighting Student Video Productions, The Oakland Post and 88.3 WXOU campus radio will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Oakland Center rooms 61 and 69. Additionally, the Student Program Board (SPB) and OU Student Congress will jointly host an open house from noon to 3 p.m. in Oakland Center Rooms 62 and 64. Campus Recreation will host a Sand Volleyball Tournament from 5-8 p.m. at Hamlin Volleyball Court in the University Student Apartments. The night will conclude with the OU Student Congress annual Rock4Rights from 7-10 p.m. in Oakland Center Gold Rooms B and C.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Student Veterans of America will hold a military field day from noon to 3 p.m. in front of Kresge Library. Following the event, all are welcome to attend a gathering commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11, beginning at 3 p.m., in the same location.
The week wraps up on Friday, Sept. 9, with "GrizzlyPalooza" - the SPB fall concert featuring hip hop artists Big Sean, Wale, G-Eazy and Curren$y. Set at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on campus grounds, the event will take place from 7-11 p.m. Detroit hip hop artist Dusty McFly will appear as the opening act. Tickets are $5 for students and $15 for guests. They are now on sale at the Center for Student Activities window in Oakland Center room 49, or at
ticketmaster.com.
Also set for Friday, Sept. 9, is the University Relations Community Business Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Oakland Center. Dozens of area businesses will display products and service features, as well as provide internship opportunities and valuable discounts for the OU community.
