The changes never stop at Oakland University’s Kresge Library, where new dean Adriene Lim has just joined the literary and university community.
Beginning this August, Lim’s leadership will shape the future of the library as she works to develop strong relationships within the university and surrounding communities. In her new role, she will be responsible for all library administration, including strategic visioning and planning, fostering staff and professional growth, and continuing to integrate the library into the intellectual life of the university.
A Michigan native, Lim served most recently as the interim university librarian at Portland State University in Oregon. The move back to her home state is a welcome one, she said.
“I am ecstatic to return to Michigan and join my new academic home,” Lim continued. “Oakland University has always had a great reputation in the region, both for the quality of its programs and the positive impact of its research and community partnerships. I am proud to belong to such a stellar institution and look forward to working with my new colleagues as we enhance library services for the entire campus and community.”
Lim has published articles and given presentations about technology, diversity, and other topics at the national, state, and local levels, and has been active in the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) divisions of the American Library Association (ALA).
She was elected to serve on the national LITA Board and ALA Council in 2010. In addition to being awarded several community and collaborative awards over the years, Lim received the Loleta D. Fyan Award for creative library service from the Michigan Library Association in 2004, the Butler Award for excellence in faculty service at Portland State in 2007, and a scholarship to participate as a fellow in the Frye Leadership Institute in 2008.
Lim received a full scholarship in 2007 to join the Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions program at Simmons College in Boston, and is now a Ph.D. candidate working on her dissertation.
She holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science and a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, both summa cum laude, from Wayne State University.
Prior to her tenure at Portland State University, Lim was the Digital Library Services team leader at Wayne State University, and was the systems librarian and head of database management for the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET), a large consortium serving 23 multi-type libraries in southeast Michigan.
Kresge Library has been a hub of activity in recent years, with the creation of an Information Commons, the incorporation of the university’s eLearning and Instructional Support unit into the library’s space, and the development of a new state-of-the-art digital medical library.
It has also added a number of student friendly and fun amenities, including the Popular Reading Collection, which includes recent fiction and non-fiction bestsellers, a Graphic Novel Collection, which is part of the library’s circulating collection, and a full-service coffee shop.
