This July, Oakland University celebrated a milestone in the construction of its new Human Health Building with a traditional “topping out” ceremony.
Students, staff, faculty and the construction team gathered at the northwest corner of OU’s campus to witness the placing of the final steel beam at the top of the building. The crew and members of the campus community were able to sign the final whitewashed beam before it was raised.
The traditional topping out ceremony includes the placing of an evergreen tree at the top of the structure, to symbolize growth and to bring good luck.
The new 160,000-square-foot Human Health Building is set to open its doors to students in the fall 2012 semester. It will house both the School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences, is part of Oakland's goal to transform health education and research in southeastern Michigan.
Construction has been ongoing since Oakland officials broke ground in the spring of 2010. The process has been often photographed and filmed. To watch the entire construction through the buildings webcam, click here.
