Veterans have new financial resource for educational benefits
Veterans at Oakland University have a new resource for financial help as a result of OU’s participation in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Yellow Ribbon Program for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The program permits Oakland and the VA to provide matching funds to cover tuition expenses not covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill educational benefits program. Fees are also covered under the program, but OU does not charge fees.
“This is another example of OU's commitment to our veterans who have served our country and are attending OU,” said Registrar Steve Shablin.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition and fees up to an amount equal to the highest in-state undergraduate rates in each state. Currently, the maximum benefits available to veterans in Michigan are $1,001 per credit hour and $19,375.50 in total fees per term.
By participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program, Oakland and the VA each contribute $500 toward closing any potential “gap” between university expenses and the benefits offered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
