Strings Camp to offer young musicians fantastic learning experiences

Highly accomplished musicians and educators will share their knowledge and skills with students of ages 12-17 during the Summer Strings Camp at Oakland University.

Presented by the Music Prep Division of the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, this music-intensive day camp will provide students with a variety of learning experiences, including a strings orchestra, chamber music rehearsals, theory classes, performance opportunities and workshops covering areas such as improvisation and international strings exploration.

"Students will be able to build on their strings skills with college-level instructors who bring with them years of active experience in chamber groups and orchestras," said Bibianne Yu, director of the Music Prep Division.

She noted that instructors – who have been involved with the Michigan Opera Theatre, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Warren Symphony Orchestra and other notable ensembles – include Miles Brown, Nadine Deleury, Joan Hovda, Alan MacNair, Liz Rowin, Nicole Shogren and Judith Teasdle.

"They're able to impart their experience and knowledge skillfully onto young players in that age group because many of these top-notch musicians also have many years of experience teaching students in the middle school and high school age range."

The Summer Strings Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 20-24, on the university's campus. The cost is $350 per student and optional meal plans are available at an additional cost. For more information or to register, call (249) 370-2030 or e-mail to stapleto@oakland.edu.
