Institutional Awards Help with the Cost of Summer Classes
Area educators interested in broadening their knowledge and skills in a variety of academic areas are invited to take advantage of second summer term course offerings at Oakland University.
Ten courses are available for college credit or for professional development purposes, and students not currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program may be eligible to receive a tuition incentive.
“The courses we have selected are very practical, very hands-on, and they’re meant to be,” said Jim Cipielewski, an associate dean and associate professor in OU’s School of Education and Human Services. “Oakland has a fantastic reputation for offering a very solid education, and a very rigorous one. In these difficult economic times, this is a way we can make that accessible to a greater number of people.”
Courses available during the second summer semester include:
Theories of Child Development and Education
Counseling Issues for Special Needs
Authors and Illustrators’ Art and Craft
The Art of Children’s Books
Narrative Reading and Writing
Non-Fiction Reading and Writing
Crisis Intervention: Preventing Self-Harm
Metropolitan Detroit Youth Studies Seminar
Current Topics in Higher Education: Studying the Achievement Gap in Higher Education
Family & Couple Counseling
The tuition incentive, made possible through Oakland University institutional grants, provides professional development students with $75 per credit hour for up to four credit hours, resulting in savings of up to $300 on a single course. Those interested in pursuing this option should visit the Graduate Admissions Professional Development site at www.oakland.edu/gradpd.
The second summer term begins on Monday, June 27, and concludes on Thursday, Aug. 18. Courses meet for just over three hours per day, either two or four days per week.
For more information on specific courses, application of college or SBCEU credit or the tuition incentive, contact Jim Cipielewski at (248) 370-3095 or cipielew@oakland.edu.
