SEHS dean pens book chapters, manuscripts for publication

Dr. Gallien, dean of OU's SEHS, has lately written several chapters and manuscripts for publication.
One of Oakland University’s newest deans is keeping busy with several manuscripts in the works. Louis Gallien, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education and Human Services, saw one such work published this spring.

As a scholar, Dr. Gallien's research centers on African American culture, history, religion and pedagogy. His degrees in African American history and theology made him an ideal candidate to collaborate on a new book titled, “Afropentecostalism and it Changing Discourses.”

"I am gratified that Peter Parris, Professor of Religion at Princeton University, reviewed the manuscript and stated that my chapter was one of the "strongest and most provocative" in the book series from New York University Press," Dr. Gallien stated. "It is important to me to keep my scholarship current and relevant to wide audiences."

Dr. Gallien contributed a chapter to the book, in which he looks at the careers of three famous musicians and explains the degree of conflict and ambivalence that they faced when each decided leave behind his roots in gospel music and the music of the Pentecostal church, and move into the realm of secular music.

His chapter is called, “Crossing Over Jordan: Navigating the Music of Heavenly Bliss and Earthly Desire in the careers of Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye.” The book was edited by Amos Yong and Estrelda Alexander and published by New York University Press.

Next on Dr. Gallien’s docket is another chapter of a book, titled “Religion and Social Justice.” His section will explore the reasons behind the "double conscious" nature of American evangelicalism stances towards Civil Rights in the Progressive Era.

The book is edited by Michael Palmer, published by Blackwell Press, and will be due out later this year.

Dr. Gallien is also working on a long-term manuscript of his own, “A Precarious Future: The Demise of Exclusive Educational Institutions in the 21st Century.” This work will be published by the Oxford University Press.
