Symposium on ASD issues to feature nationally renowned expert
Oakland University's Center for Autism Research, Education and Support (OUCARES) and the Department of Human Development and Child Studies invites educators, researchers, students, policymakers, practitioners, persons living with autism spectrum disorder and their family members to an Autism Symposium focusing on quality of life issues for adolescents and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.
Featuring Dr. Jed Baker, a nationally-known expert who has appeared on a number of national television and cable networks, the event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday May 13.
The author of "Preparing for Life - The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood," Baker will speak on how family members of adolescents and young adults with ASD can learn to handle challenging behaviors, as well as teach important social skills.
Also speaking will be Dr. Shana Nichols, clinical director and researcher for the ASPIRE Center for Learning and Development and author of "Girls Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum: Understanding and Support in Adolescence and Adulthood." She will discuss what parents and professionals should know about the pre-teen and teenage years.
Finally, Avi Glickman of the PAAL Educational Program and Mission for Educating Children with Autism (MECA) will discuss how common, modern technology can be used as a tool for teaching.
