Oakland University’s Board of Trustees has recognized three of the university’s most accomplished students, with the annual Alfred G., Matilda R. Wilson and the Human Relations Awards.
This year’s recipients are Stephen Parker, mechanical engineering major, Marta Bauer, English major, and Jasmine Rudolph, who is majoring in nursing.
The Wilson awards are reserved for the top male and female scholars and leaders, while the Human Relations Award recognizes a student who has made a valuable social impact within the university community.
All three students are graduating seniors and all have built impressive academic, social and community-service based portfolios. The awards are presented annually, are selected by a committee and require the approval of the vice president for academic affairs and the president.
2011 Alfred G. Wilson Award
Stephen S. Parker
Hailing from Charlevoix, Parker is active in the Society of Automotive Engineers and serving as president and helping to grow the organization from nine to nearly forty members. As part of the organization, Parker has met with legislators, worked on competitive SAE vehicles, and appeared in numerous publications. He is also a member of The Honors College, and stays involved on campus as a ream leader for the Residence Hall Design Team and the Nightwatch Housing Staff.
“As busy as it sometimes felt, I am extremely happy to have attended OU to enjoy all of the experiences the community has to offer both in the academic and extra-curricular sense,” Parker said. “I can only hope that I have left some kind of mark on the university along the way.”
2011 Matilda R. Wilson Award
Marta L. Bauer
With a 3.95 GPA, Bauer has always been dedicated to academic success. Her long list of organizations and activities prove that she is an accomplished leader as well. Throughout her time at OU, Bauer, a Bay City native, has been a student liaison to the Board of Trustees, a housing ambassador, orientation group leader and an honors college cell leader.
“My goal in college has always been to make a difference for others and for the university that has given me so much,” Bauer said. “The time that Oakland took to develop my leadership skills and confidence has had a larger effect on my life than I can possibly explain.”
2011 Human Relations Award
Jasmine I. Rudolph
Dedicated to student achievement and community service, Rudolph has not only been involved in numerous organizations, she has founded her own as well. Originally from Southfield, Rudolph came to OU and got involved as a resident assistant, a peer mentor in several departments, and with several student organizations. She hosted a show on WXOU and cofounded R.E.D.C.O.W. (Revive Experience Dream Change Our World), dedicated to raise social awareness.
“My campus involvement has always entailed a strong desire to serve as an advocate for promoting greater community awareness and unity,” Rudolph said. “During my time here at Oakland, not only have I grown in my personal understanding of diversity, but I’ve matured in my ability to act effectively as a leader.”
