College graduates seeking employment are seeing increased opportunities in small or midsize businesses. According an article in the March 6 issue of The Detroit Free Press, small and medium sized businesses are hiring again after a hiatus during the recession. The article notes that recruiting has increased for careers in insurance, personal finance, retail, engineering and government work.
In Michigan, small businesses account for a significant share of the state's economic production and hiring, according to the Small Business Association's Office of Advocacy February 2011 report. Specifically, the office reports that small businesses totaled 820,244 in the state in 2008. Of these, 179,525 were employers, and they accounted for 51.6% of private-sector jobs in the state. Small firms made up 98.3% of the state’s employers.
For business students and graduates, the Free Press article notes Jackson National Life from Lansing as an example. Jackson hired 50 Michigan college graduates in 2010. This year's plans include hiring accounting and finance majors, actuaries with degrees in economics, statistics, math and actuarial science, and computer science majors with experience in Java programming.
Retail companies -- such as Target, Sherwin-Williams, Family Video, CVS and Speedway -- are also good options as employers. The article notes that retail organizations look for candidates who can do presentations, interact with customers, and have organizational skills.
