Oakland Symphony to perform "The Planets" on Jan. 30

The Oakland Symphony will perform one of classical music's most beloved pieces, The Planets, by Gustav Holst, as part of its 14th Annual David Daniels Young Artists Concert set for Sunday, Jan. 30. Although the work is almost 100 years old, some of its refrains are so embedded in our culture that they are instantly recognizable, and hummable.

The concert also will feature Brett Dean's Komarov's Fall from Three Memorials and solo performances by the winners of the annual Oakland University Department of Music, Theatre and Dance Concerto Competition. David Mety will perform Concerto for Vibraphone and String Orchestra by Emmanuel Séjourné, soprano Suzanne Grogan will perform Durch Zärtlichkeit by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and pianist Alexandra Zetye will perform Concerto No.2 in G minor, op.22, by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Formerly known as the Pontiac Oakland Symphony, the Oakland Symphony entered a new era this season as Oakland University's in-residence orchestra. This venerable, semi-professional organization has a 35-year tradition of excellence and remains committed to providing southeastern Michigan with exceptional performances of the finest symphonic repertoire.

The performance will begin at 3 p.m. in Varner Recital Hall on the Oakland University Campus. Tickets are $26 for general admission, $21 for senior citizens and $16 for students.
